Everything you need to know about getting around Thailand’s island paradise
Koh Tao is a small island, but walking everywhere isn’t practical when the viewpoints, beaches, and restaurants you want to explore are scattered across hilly terrain. A scooter changes everything—suddenly the whole island opens up.
Here’s everything you need to know about renting and riding on Koh Tao.
Why Rent a Scooter?
Freedom to explore. Koh Tao’s best spots aren’t always on the main road. Hidden beaches, viewpoints, and restaurants are tucked away on side roads that taxis don’t frequent.
Cost-effective. At ฿150-300 per day, a scooter pays for itself after just a few trips. Taxis can charge ฿100-200 per ride.
Convenience. Want late-night food? Need to catch a sunrise at a viewpoint? Your scooter is ready when you are.
What to Expect: Prices & Options
Basic Automatic Scooters (125cc)
- Price: ฿150-250 per day
- Best for: Most tourists, beginners
- Notes: Easy to ride, sufficient power for most roads
Semi-Automatic / Larger Bikes (150cc+)
- Price: ฿250-400 per day
- Best for: Experienced riders, steep hills
- Notes: Better for challenging terrain like the road to Tanote Bay
Weekly Discounts
Most shops offer weekly rates at ฿1,000-1,500—significant savings if you’re staying longer.
Where to Rent
Rental shops cluster around:
- Mae Haad Pier – Most convenient when you arrive
- Sairee Beach – Plenty of options along the main strip
- Chalok Baan Kao – Southern area shops
Pro tip: Compare a few shops. Prices vary, and so does bike quality.

Safety Tips That Actually Matter
Drive on the Left
Thailand drives on the left. This catches some tourists off guard, especially at intersections.
Wear a Helmet
Not negotiable. Road rash heals; brain injuries don’t. Many shops include helmets, but quality varies—consider bringing or buying your own.
Watch for Hazards
- Sand patches – Especially on turns near beaches
- Stray dogs – They sometimes chase bikes
- Wet roads – Rain makes everything slippery
- Other tourists – Some are riding for the first time
Slow Down on Hills
Koh Tao’s hills catch people out. Downhill braking on steep roads requires technique—use engine braking, don’t ride the brakes.
No Drinking and Riding
Obvious but worth stating. Koh Tao sees accidents every week, and alcohol is usually involved.
Best Routes for Exploration
Beach-Hopper Route (2-3 hours)
Mae Haad → Sairee → Mango Bay (walk from here) → Freedom Beach → Tanote Bay → Ao Leuk → Shark Bay → Chalok → back to Mae Haad
Sunset Viewpoint Route (1-2 hours)
Start afternoon: Sairee → West Coast road → Two View → Love Koh Tao viewpoint for sunset
